[…] In fact, the kind of thing I would most likely put together already exists, and it is called ASSASINS and Sondheim wrote it. I have never actually seen this play, but […]
Just, re: Assassins, I saw Assassins in 2004 in the old Studio 54 space (I think..?), and after it was over, my wife Megan asked me what I thought, and I said, “I guess it didn’t completely work, but the ways in which it sort of missed the mark are interesting to examine, and its investigation into the kind of society that creates these kinds of people is a worthwhile one, although maybe its point was, you know, in the end buried under all the pretense and although all the little Brechtian distancing effects were there for a reason, I mean obviously, in the end they probably actually worked against the play, because it kept the audience from sharing any real empathy with the characters so at the climax it was hard to say what was actually at stake,” and then I said, “What did you think?” and Megan said, “It was TERRIBLE.”

Fun Fact: I too got into Assassins by way of Sarah Vowell, and somehow eventually I ended up with my girlfriend because of it. The moral of the story is that everything good comes from presidential assassination drama? I think? Wait. That’s terrible.

Have you ever actually listened to Assasins? If you have/do, I hope it is the revival featuring my homeboy Denis O’Hare as Guiteau. It’s not the best of Sondheim’s musicals but it is a lot of fun for us nerd types.

‘Assassins’ is great, I would highly recommend you check it out. I think this show of yours could very easily work, the story sounds full of material that could be set to music. I approve of this idea!
